The worldwide concert series is named for Daniel Pearl, a Wall Street Journal reporter and violinist who was kidnapped and murdered by terrorists in Pakistan in 2002. In the spirit of Pearl’s love of music and belief in its ability to bridge differences among people, the Daniel Pearl Foundation launched the first World Music Days on Oct. 10, 2002, which would have been his 39th birthday. Since then the series has grown to include more than 4,900 performances in 101 countries. The Daniel Pearl Foundation specifically requests that these concerts be free of charge.

The local concert, co-sponsored by the Shoreline Acoustic Music Society and Friday Night Folk, two groups that promote performances throughout southeastern Connecticut, will be the region’s first participation in the international series.

“We’re thrilled and honored to join this musical celebration,” said Sherry Stidfole of Quaker Hill, a co-founder of the acoustic music society, known as SAMS, who has been helping coordinate this month’s event.

Nick Evento of Friday Night Folk said he was pleased to collaborate again with SAMS on such a worthwhile event. The two organizations worked together last July to put on the fourth annual Shoreline Acoustic Music Festival in New London.”There is no financial obligation to participate and all musicians are welcome. World Music Days is an awareness-raising program, not a fundraiser,” the foundation says on its website.
